Electrocardiogram (ECG)

What is an electrocardiogram (ECG)?

An electrocardiogram, otherwise known as an ECG, is a common test used to analyse and monitor the heart’s rhythm.

It is a quick, safe and non-invasive test and no electricity is put into the body while it’s carried out.

Using sensors (electrodes) attached to the skin on the legs, arms and chest, an ECG is able to detect electrical signals produced by the heart each time it beats.

The signals detected are recorded by a machine and assessed by a medical professional to see if there any abnormalities.

When is an ECG used?

An electrocardiogram is often used to help diagnose or monitor conditions concerning the heart and it can be used to investigate symptoms of underlying heart problems.

An ECG can help detect and monitor:

You may need an ECG if you are experiencing any of the following signs and symptoms:

  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Rapid pulse
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue

Types of ECG

There are 3 main types of electrocardiogram:

  • A resting ECG – which is carried out while you are lying down, comfortable and in a state of rest
  • A stress or exercise ECG – carried out during the use of a treadmill or bike
  • An ambulatory ECG (more commonly known as a Holter Monitor) – the electrodes are connected to a small portable machine so your heart can be monitored at home for 24 hours or more

The type of electrocardiogram you have will ultimately depend on your symptoms and the suspected heart condition.

As an example, an exercise ECG may be advised if your symptoms are triggered by physical activity, whereas a resting ECG may be more suitable if your symptoms occur at a resting state.
