Earwax Microsuction

Your ear canal produces earwax (cerumen) to protect the ear from dust particles and dead skin and to protect the ear canal skin from irritation. Excess wax usually finds its way out of the canal and into the ear opening naturally, and then is washed away, but often wax builds up and block the ear causing discomfort, hearing problems and sometimes pain. A specialist can remove this build-up of excess wax by microsuction.

What does the Earwax Microsuction Involve?

It is recommended that you use either olive oil or sodium bicarbonate in your ears for 3-4 days running up to your appointment to ensure the wax is soft enough to be removed. A specialist will look through a microscope and suction the ear with a small suction device. This gentle device can be quite noisy and a little uncomfortable but the procedure is very quick and should not be painful.

What Results can Patients Expect?

Patients will notice an immediate improvement in their hearing and relief of any discomfort they excess earwax was causing inside the ear. However for the first few hours after treatment the greater sound sensitivity may cause some mild dizziness or disorientation and your ears may feel a little sore.
