Antimicrobial Awareness Week at One Ashford Hospital

One Ashford Hospital is actively participating in World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW), a global initiative that highlights the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promotes responsible use of antibiotics. Running from 18-24 November, this annual event, organised by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to raise awareness about the dangers of antibiotic misuse and encourage best practices among healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public.

AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve and become resistant to the medications designed to eliminate them. This makes infections harder to treat, leading to prolonged illnesses, higher medical costs, and increased mortality. WAAW emphasises the critical need for collective action to combat AMR and protect the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.

One Ashford Hospital’s pharmacy team has taken proactive steps to engage both staff and patients in the campaign. The hospital has been decorated with vibrant posters and informative flyers to educate everyone on the significance of using antibiotics wisely. Additionally, to foster greater involvement, staff members were invited to take part in a fun and educational crossword challenge. Participants stand a chance to win free coffee vouchers and a hot lunch for the hospital’s on-site coffee shop, adding a touch of incentive to the awareness drive.

The pharmacy team at One Ashford Hospital hopes these efforts will inspire positive conversations around antimicrobial stewardship, encouraging everyone to use antibiotics responsibly and help curb the spread of resistant infections.

“We’re proud to support this important initiative,” said Nathan from the pharmacy team. “Our goal is to empower our staff and patients with the knowledge to make informed decisions about antibiotic use, contributing to the global fight against antimicrobial resistance.”
