Dr Syed Ather Ahmed

I have more than 20 years of paediatric experience in the UK. I have been working as a Consultant Paediatrician at the Lister Hospital since 2013. Currently, I am appointed as the Clinical Director of the neonatal paediatric department since 2022. I was Deputy Clinical Director for Neonatology from 2014-2018 and appointed to the role of  Clinical Governance Lead for the department of Neonatology from 2019 to 2022. My aim is to provide high quality of care to the patient and carer. I ensure  patient safety is maintained and services provided to patients, carers and staff are improved.

Due to the unique training culture within the NHS, my clinical experiences have been rich and varied. Due to my passion to gain expertise in Paediatrics I have completed paediatric training by working in several centres of excellence across UK such as Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Evelina Children’s Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital NHS Trust, Addenbrookes Hospital, Queens Medical Centre and Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

I have seen and treated huge numbers of children over the years with both common and complex medical conditions. My experience includes treating patients from multicultural backgrounds and I am proud to offer anyone I see the same level of service. I keep myself up to date with clinical knowledge and research hence I practice evidence based medicine. As a parent myself, I understand the importance of being friendly and approachable with clear and jargon free explanations. I see children and young people quickly and efficiently.

I am committed to provide high quality training and supervision to junior doctors, reflected in junior doctors and colleagues feedback (5.6 out of 6). I am passionate to teach medical students and hospital staff. I am honorary senior clinical lecturer for the Paediatric students at University College London medical school and Cambridge medical school. I am the Medical Director and Instructor for the New Born Life Support course  and neonatal simulation training instructor providing service to train health care professionals in new-born life support course and simulation training.

I have been recognised for the excellent care provided to Patients and Carers and also for the service development in the department by awarding with the NHS Clinical Excellence award for 2016, 2018 and 2019 at the Lister Hospital.

I have published my research work and review articles in the international peer reviewed journals such as American Journal of Haematology and Oncology, European Journal of Paediatrics, Journal of rare diseases and British Journal of Paediatric Surgery. I have presented my research and other projects in the international, national and regional conferences.
