Menopause Clinic Launches at One Ashford Hospital

One Ashford Hospital is pleased to launch its new Menopause Clinic, led by Miss Choy Lee, Consultant Gynaecologist

Women go through menopause when their ovaries stop producing eggs, along with the sex hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.  Sometimes known as ‘the change in life’, the average age of the menopause in the UK is 50-51 years, although about 1% of women will experience premature menopause.  From the age of 40, a woman’s ovaries show signs of decreased activity, which in turn results in an alteration of the pattern of the monthly cycle.  Periods become less and less frequent and eventually stop.

Although many women go through the menopause without any problems, others experience distressing symptoms which result from the lack of oestrogen.  Menopausal symptoms affect roughly 70% of women, the commonest symptoms being:

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Interrupted sleep pattern
  • Mood swings or changes such as irritability, depression or anxiety
  • Poor concentration
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Loss of libido (sex drive)
  • Vaginal dryness and weakness of the pelvic floor muscles
  • Headaches
  • Urinary changes

These symptoms can start a few years before the menopause as ovarian function starts to decrease and can continue for up to 10 years after the menopause.  In addition, the loss of the sex hormones can lead to osteoporosis and increased risk of heart disease.  You should seek help if you are:

  • Have minimal symptoms but are concerned about long-term prevention of bone loss, especially if you are at higher risk
  • You who have gone through an early menopause or have had your ovaries removed surgically
  • Approaching, or have just reached the menopause and have symptoms which are severe enough to make you seek help

At The One Ashford Menopause Clinic, we will work with you to provide the right treatment aimed at alleviating your symptoms, and help you make a smooth transition at this important time in your life.  Your initial 1 hour consultation will cover the following:

  • An assessment of your symptoms and general well being
  • A discussion on management options including dietary and lifestyle adjustments
  • An in-depth discussion about using HRT, including risks and benefits and available regimes that can be individualised for you
  • Alternative drug treatments to HRT
  • Issues of low libido and testosterone replacement

The Clinic is running on specific Saturdays, the first being held on 30th November.  No referral is required from your GP.

Costs are as follows:

£250 – Initial 1 hour consultation

£150 – 30 minute follow-up consultation
